The FCC was founded in 1934 when the government needed an agency to control the nation's airwaves. In 1974, a father wrote a complaint to the FCC over a radio station in New York, WBAI's airing of George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" bit. Back then, the list of profanities wasn't anything, but Carlin changed all that. Of course, the FCC really started to go after Stern in the late 80's when he aired a guest playing a piano with his penis. Since then, he's been on the Commission's S-list several times. According to one organization, of the $8,000,000 in fines the FCC has filed in the last several years, Stern accounted for $4 million. Sadly, FCC commissioners are chosen by the president, and not the American people. The head commish is Michael Powell, whose father's Secretary of State Colin Powell. There's one Democrat on the board, and that's Michael Copps, who's one of the staunchest critics of indecency. Most of the people the FCC seems to protect are overly religious. One of the biggest complainers is the Parents Television Council, headed by L. Brent Bozell. They claim to have thousands of members, and many of them complained to the FCC over Bono's use of the F-word. However, they claimed the FCC only counted them as one complaint. Nonetheless, the FCC did find the Bono incident obscene, but didn't fine NBC. Recently, it was discovered that the PTC made up 99.8% of all complaints to the FCC. Because the FCC's members are chosen only by the president, there's nothing we can do to control what they do unless a new president's chosen. As aforementioned, the FCC's members are conservative Republicans except for Michael Copps. However, some think that what Stern fans should do is listen to shows such as Rush Limbaugh and write the FCC about anything deemed offensive in those programs. Of course, Oprah's a great example, too. Click here to hear Eric Idle's "FCC Song"! CLEAR CHANNEL
Like most media companies, Clear Channel started small. In 1974, Lowry Mays and partner Red McCombs purchased two stations in the San Antonio area. Because of limits the FCC had on broadcasters, they didn't grow too much. Then, it happened. In 1996, President Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act, allowing broadcasters to own 2 AMs, 7 FMs and eventually 2 TV stations in each market of America. Because of this, mergers came about and what was Evergreen, Jacor, AMFM and a few others all fed into Clear Channel. CC also took over Premiere Radio Networks, which gave them a stranglehold on Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, Art Bell and Jim Rome among others. Thanks to grandfathering, Clear Channel gained control of several Stern affiliates. The company's been very anti-Stern, but due to ratings, they were afraid to can him... Until Janet's wardrobe malfunction. The company used the incident to can Stern on six of their stations, claiming that they set limits and he blew over the line. Of course, it left a few million Stern fans without an affiliate. Right now, the best thing we can do as Stern fans? BOYCOTT BUSINESSES THAT ADVERTISE ON CLEAR CHANNEL STATIONS AND BILLBOARDS. Sadly, since there's thousands, maybe even millions of businesses that advertise on CC stations/billboards, we cannot list them all. However, a little does a lot. CLEAR CHANNEL ADVERTISERS National businesses: Budweiser Ann Arbor, MI Lamps Plus Battle Creek, MI McCamly Plaza Hotel Dallas, TX Detroit, MI AAMCO Transmissions Grand Rapids, MI Accurate Engines - Grandville Indianapolis, IN Las Vegas, NV Palms Resort Sandusky, OH Cedar Point Washington, DC Potomic Hills Mall - Springfield, VA (CC owned... yes, CC owns malls, apparently)
Remember, this is ONLY a partial list. If you have more, report them to us at chuck69dotcom@gmail.com. Also, if you haven't stopped listening to your local Clear Channel-owned stations, do so now. Same thing with concert venues, since they own a lot of them, too. Go to their website to see if your local stations or concert venues are owned by Clear Channel. For you Grand Rapidians, here's what they own in town: 1230 WTKG (7.6.06: I have erased "Van Andel Arena" and "The Orbit Room" because they are no longer CC O&Os; CC spun-off their concert division, which is now Live Nation and is publicly-traded (NYSE: LYV).
